Christ Lutheran considers itself a family of God's people brought together by a common faith in Jesus. The median age of the congregation is "forty something". It began some forty years ago as a mission congregation and has never lost that sense of purpose.
This family likes to laugh and play together. We can worship with passion. We hold each other in times of great sadness and sorrow. A prime characteristic of this congregation is its engagement in social ministry.
We are inclusive. Visitors are warmly welcomed yet given space. Race, social standings, sexual preference, age or what your past was like, does not matter in this congregation.(NFL affiliation counts but conflict is friendly .) Leader ship is shared and there is no group seeking to control or dominate this congregation. There is a genuine desire to grow in Christ Jesus as our Savior and Lord and be all God may call us to be individually and as a faith community.
We are ecumenical. St Patrick’s and CLC are working closely and considering what it means to be Covenant Churches with each other. St Pats, CLC and Immanuel Episcopal have begun S.A.I.L. (Senior Affordable Independent Living) and along with Inter-Faith Housing of Western Md will break ground to over 50 housing units this spring. The Cumberland Area Ministerial Assoc. is an important way we join with others.
We try to respond to need in our area and beyond: Quilting for LWR, Easter and Christmas baskets, Christmas gifts for those in need (over 100 served each year), emergency aid, and Epiphany gift cards. We sent two work teams to Florida in 2006 to repair homes. After Katrina, the Ministerial Assoc. started a re-location project and brought families to Cumberland. (Pastor Chuck and Pastor Sherrill from 2nd Baptist co-chaired this project)
We use "blended" liturgical worship, and believe traditional and contemerary can both be appreciated in the same service. We think this is part of celebrating diversity and inclusnivess and worship is a good place to show this. We try to be very visitor friendly to non-Lutherans. On Wed. evenings we are informal but include Scripture, homily, and Holy Communion. A service of healing and anointing is the first Wed. of each month.
